A few more of the Holbein images from In Praise of Folly. The third one is on the subject of drunkenness. Someone, presumably not Holbein himself, has inscribed the artist's name above the drunken lout.

Bavarian-born restaurant manager Reinhard Wurtz, who recently became an Australian citizen, broke the record for carrying one-litre steins of beer, when he carried 20 for 40 metres last night. (with photo)

back when i was a security guard at a certain art museum you would often find me abandoning any important duties to press my face against the glass to examine whatever pages they'd torn out of bibles or any other old book for the sake of preservation. these are great.

i wonder if there was ever a time in the early part of the 20th century, say sometime around the rise of the modern "comic book", where someone wrote an article titled: "Zip Bang!, Illustrated Texts No Longer Just For Adults!"

it's true indeed. Erasmus' Folly was a learned and sophisticated book, written in Latin, the language of the educated elite. Imagine such a book today with loony tunes in the margins.

Being a gloomy varlet, I've always love Holbein's Dance of Death series. Zounds! Sequential art!
